Prepare for Your Visit

Leave your appointment understanding what was found, what your choices are and what comes next.

Choose the questions that matter most to you. Save this page on your phone or bring a few written notes to discuss with your dental team.

Before you go

Bring an up-to-date medication and allergy list, relevant health information, any insurance details and your main concerns. Note when symptoms began and what you hope to understand at the visit.

Understand what your dentist found

  • What did you find, and which teeth or gums are affected?
  • Can you show me the findings on my photos, X-rays or gum measurements?
  • What needs attention first, and why?

Compare your options

  • What are my treatment options, including less extensive options when appropriate?
  • What are the benefits, risks and limitations of each option for me?
  • What could happen if I wait or choose no treatment?
  • Would a specialist evaluation or second opinion help with this decision?

Plan the appointment and cost

  • How many visits might I need, and what should I expect during recovery?
  • What will help keep me comfortable during treatment?
  • Can I have a written estimate showing what is included and any possible additional costs?
  • If I use insurance, what should I confirm with my plan about coverage and my share of the cost?

Know what happens afterward

  • How will we check whether the treatment has worked?
  • What home care and follow-up appointments will I need?
  • What symptoms should prompt me to call, and whom should I contact after hours?
